Geography and Protected Areas of the Region
Located in the far south of Chile, the Aysén Region stands out for its remarkable geographical diversity. Its territory stretches from the Patagonian steppe to evergreen rainforests, weaving together lakes, rivers, fjords, and ancient glaciers. This rich water heritage makes it one of the purest regions on the planet, sheltering both the Northern and Southern Patagonian Ice Fields.
Half of its surface area is designated as Protected Wild Areas, most notably the Laguna San Rafael National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The backbone of the region is the Carretera Austral, an 800-kilometer scenic highway that opens up a world of adventure, such as trekking in Queulat National Park, rafting on the Baker River, and kayaking through the waters of General Carrera Lake.
